Survey Americans welcome our new robot overlords
Survey Americans welcome our new robot overlordsSurvey Americans welcome our new robot overlordsA new survey of consumer attitudes toward automation has found that Americans are ready to accept robot workers in growing a number of roles. And yet, at the same time, they remain complacent about the threat artificial intelligence poses to their own jobs. The survey, commissioned by customer service firm LivePerson, asked 2,000 American consumers a series of questions about robots and artificial intelligence. Among the jobs that at least 1-in-5 people said they would trust a robot or AI to perform wereCashier (55%)Factory worker (52%)Customer service representative (28%)hallo taxi driver (22%)Mechanic (22%)and Accountant (20%)Smaller - but not insubstantial - numbers were ready to accept robot pilots, truck drivers, and teachers. This theoretical trust in robot workers may be an outgrowth of consumers daily interactions with intelligent machines. Some 85% of respondents reported interact ing with ATMs, 67% with voice recognition assistants such as Siri or Alexa, 40% with customer service chatbots, and 7% with self-driving cars.Despite their growing comfort with robots, however, most Americans are confident that they themselves wont be replaced anytime soon. Some 66% of people said they agree or strongly agree that, while many other industries are at risk of losing jobs to automation, their own industry is secure.Only 15% of respondents were certain - or constantly worried - they their industry would disappear due to automation. Generally, those with professional degrees were the least worried about the threat of automation, while those with minimal education were the most worried. The top jobs consumers believe susceptible to automation in the next 20 years are manufacturing (68%), followed by banking, accounting, and financial services (52%), and customer service (52%). As for specific jobs, consumers expect factory workers and cashiers to be mostly robots in 20 y ears.Underestimating the automation threat? This view of automation as a contained threat would seem at odds with various expert predictions in recent years.Research out of Oxford University has found that some 47% of American jobs are highly susceptible to automation. A White House report put out in December 2016 predicts that 3 million drivers - truck drivers and drivers for on-demand services like Uber - will be put out of work soon. A McKinsey Company report released in January, meanwhile, concluded that 60% of all occupations have at least 30% technically automatable activities. On the plus side, McKinsey estimates that automation could raise productivity growth on a global basis by as much as 0.8 to 1.4 percent annually.Bill Gates suggested last month that robots should be taxed if they put humans out of work.

How to Use the Holiday Season to Job Search
How to Use the Holiday Season to Job SearchHow to Use the Holiday Season to Job SearchAre you about to start a job search or are you in the midst of looking for a new job? If you are considering waiting to start your job or putting it on hold because of the holidays, think again. Contrary to popular opinion, the holidays are agood time of year to find a job. Employers dont stop hiring just because its the holiday season. Vacation time might mean that your interviews will be spread out over more time, but companies will still review applications and schedule those interviews. In addition, the holiday season is a perfect time of year to network your way to a new job. Hiring is a Year-Round Process Executive Dave Harshbarger explains why hiring continues, regardless of the time of year. For many of us, the holiday season is a time to sit back and relax, to take a break from business, to focus our attention on friends and family. For businesses, the needs that drive hiring throughout the year dont change just because the paid holidays are bunched up on the last pages of the calendar. He explains that at many companies hiring and personnel activities continue at all times of the year, because the needs that drive hiring - competitive pressures, growing markets, strategic initiatives - dont take a break. And, sometimes companies have an annual budget and headcount thats timed to the calendar year. In this case, managers may be quite eager to conclude hiring by the start of the next year, since the budget may leid roll over. Hiring Continues During the Holiday Season Harshbarger adds, Hiring during the holidays is sometimes complicated because key decision makers are absent. In the case of hiring, arguably the most important decision companies make, it is common for key individuals to interrupt their vacations (where feasible) to meet with shortlisted candidates. In all cases, we understand that to meet our goals in the New Year, it is critical that we stay foc used on our staffing plans even as we turn our gaze homeward. If you do land interviews during the holiday season, its possible that they will occur over video chat or phone calls to accommodate vacationers schedules. Tips for a Successful Holiday Job Search As you can see, employers continue to focus on hiring, even though there is a temptation to do otherwise. The same should hold true for job seekers. It can be easier to say Im not going to bother, its a bad time of year for job hunting. than it is to move forward with a job search. However, for those who do keep plugging away, the additional opportunities are worth the effort. Dont Slow Down Your Job Search Some people give up job searching between Thanksgiving and New Years Day. Dont be one of them. Employers are still hiring and there may be less competition, from other job seekers this time of year. In addition, companies that budget on an annual basis may have jobs that they need to hire for now. Use Down Time to Your Ad vantage If youre working at a company where the holiday season is a slow one, take advantage. If you have vacation time you need to use up, schedule some networking meetings. Its an ideal time of year to connect with acquaintances you havent been in andeutung with in a while, both to celebrate the holiday season and to let them know youre in the market for a job. If you have extra time, you can also use it to update your resume, refresh your LinkedIn profile, or create a portfolio. Use Personal and Professional Events for Networking If you are attending a holiday social event, it is definitely appropriate to mention that you are job searching. Accept all the invitations you receive, both personal and professional. You never know who may be able to help. Friends and family, as well as business acquaintances, are typically more than happy to assist. Note that holiday-themed volunteer events are another opportunity to expand your network by meeting more people, and to share that youre job searching. Send Holiday Cards Sending a Happy Holidays or a Happy New Year greeting card to networking contacts, recruiters, and to employers you have interviewed with is another good way to connect with those who can help with your job search. Connect Online Send anemail or use aprofessional or social networking site(like LinkedIn or Facebook) to get in touch. The holiday season is a good excuse to touch base and a good time to reinforce or expand your network. Relax and Enjoy During this time of year, its also wise to take some time for yourself and your family. Relax a little and dont forget to enjoy the holiday season. Youll enjoy both your job search and the holidays more, and thats important for everyone, whether job seeking or not.

Fourteen signs that you are emotionally intelligent
Fourteen signs that you are emotionally mit niveauFourteen signs that you are emotionally anspruchsvollWhen emotional intelligence (EQ) first appeared to the masses, it served as the missing link in a peculiar finding people with average IQs outperform those with the highest IQs 70% of the time. This anomaly threw a massive wrench into the broadly held assumption that IQ was the sole source of success.Decades of research now point to emotional intelligence as being the critical factor that sets star performers apart from the rest of the pack. The connection is so strong that 90% of top performers have high emotional intelligence.Emotional intelligence is the something in each of us that is a bit intangible. It affects how we manage behavior, navigate social complexities, and make partieal decisions to achieve positive results.Despite the significance of EQ, its intangible nature makes it very difficult to know how much you have and what you can do to improve if youre lacking. You can always take a scientifically validated test, such as the one that comes with theEmotional Intelligence 2.0book.Unfortunately, quality (scientifically valid) EQ tests arent free. So, Ive analyzed the data from the million-plus people TalentSmart has tested in order to identify the behaviors that are the hallmarks of a high EQ. What follows are aya signs that you have a high EQ.You have a robust emotional vocabularyAll people experience emotions, but it is a select few who can accurately identify them as they occur. Our research shows that only 36% of people can do this, which is problematic because unlabeled emotions often go misunderstood, which leads to irrational choices and counterproductive actions.People with high EQs master their emotions because they understand them, and they use an extensive vocabulary of feelings to do so. While many people might describe themselves as simply feeling bad, emotionally intelligent people can pinpoint whether they feel irritable, frustrated, downtrodden, or anxious. The mora specific your word choice, the better insight you have into exactly how you are feeling, what caused it, and what you should do about it.Youre curious about peopleIt doesnt matter if theyre introverted or extroverted, emotionally intelligent people are curious about everyone around them. This curiosity is the product of empathy, one of the most significant gateways to a high EQ. The more you care about other people and what theyre going through, the more curiosity youre going to have about them. You know your strengths and weaknessesEmotionally intelligent people dont just understand emotions they know what theyre good at and what theyre terrible at. They also know who pushes their buttons and the environments (both situations and people) that enable them to succeed. Having a high EQ means you know your strengths and you know how to lean into them and use them to your full advantage while keeping your weaknesses from holding you back.Youre a good jud ge of characterMuch of emotional intelligence comes down to social awareness the ability to read other people, know what theyre about, and understand what theyre going through. Over time, this skill makes you an exceptional judge of character. People are no mystery to you. You know what theyre all about and understand their motivations, even those that lie hidden beneath the surface. You are difficult to offendIf you have a firm grasp of whom you are, its difficult for someone to say or do something that gets your goat. Emotionally intelligent people are self-confident and open-minded, which creates a pretty thick skin. You may even poke fun at yourself or let other people make jokes about you because you are able to mentally draw the line between humor and degradation. You let go of mistakesEmotionally intelligent people distance themselves from their mistakes, but do so without forgetting them. By keeping their mistakes at a safe distance, yet still mobiltelefon enough to refer to, they are able to adapt and adjust for future success. It takes refined self-awareness to walk this tightrope between dwelling and remembering. Dwelling too long on your mistakes makes you anxious and gun shy, while forgetting about them completely makes you bound to repeat them. The key to balance lies in your ability to transform failures into nuggets of improvement. This creates the tendency to get right back up every time you fall down. You dont hold grudgesThe negative emotions that come with holding onto a grudge are actually a stress response. Just thinking about the event sends your body into fight-or-flight mode, a survival mechanism that forces you to stand up and fight or run for the hills when faced with a threat. When the threat is imminent, this reaction is essential to your survival, but when the threat is ancient history, holding onto that stress wreaks havoc on your body and can have devastating health consequences over time. In fact, researchers at Emory University h ave shown that holding onto stress contributes to high blood pressure and heart disease. Holding onto a grudge means youre holding onto stress, and emotionally intelligent people know to avoid this at all costs. Letting go of a grudge leid only makes you feel better now but can also improve your health. You neutralize toxic peopleDealing with difficult people is frustrating and exhausting for most. High EQ individuals control their interactions with toxic people by keeping their feelings in check. When they need to confront a toxic person, they approach the situation rationally. They identify their own emotions and dont allow anger or frustration to fuel the chaos. They also consider the difficult persons standpoint and are able to find solutions and common ground. Even when things completely derail, emotionally intelligent people are able to take the toxic person with a grain of salt to avoid letting him or her bring them down. You dont seek perfectionEmotionally intelligent people w ont set perfection as their target because they know that it doesnt exist. Human beings, by our very nature, are fallible. When perfection is your goal, youre always left with a nagging sense of failure that makes you want to give up or reduce your effort. You end up spending your time lamenting what you failed to accomplish and what you should have done differently instead of moving forward, excited about what youve achieved and what you will accomplish in the future. You disconnectTaking regular time off the grid is a sign of a high EQ because it helps you to keep your stress under control and to live in the moment. When you make yourself available to your work 24/7, you expose yourself to a constant barrage of stressors. Forcing yourself offline and even- gulp- turning off your phone gives your body and mind a break. Studies have shown that something as simple as an e-mail-nachricht break can lower stress levels. Technology enables constant communication and the expectation that y ou should be available 24/7. It is extremely difficult to enjoy a stress-free moment outside of work when an e-mail that will change your train of thought and get you thinking (read stressing) about work can drop onto your phone at any moment. You limit your caffeine intakeDrinking excessive amounts of caffeine triggers the release of adrenaline, and adrenaline is the source of the fight-or-flight response. The fight-or-flight mechanism sidesteps rational thinking in favor of a faster response to ensure survival. This is great when a bear is chasing you, but not so great when youre responding to a curt e-mail. When caffeine puts your brain and body into this hyper-aroused state of stress, your emotions overrun your behavior. Caffeines long half-life ensures you stay this way as it takes its sweet time working its way out of your body. High-EQ individuals know that caffeine is trouble, and they dont let it get the better of them. You get enough sleepIts difficult to overstate the impor tance of sleep to increasing your emotional intelligence and managing your stress levels. When you sleep, your brain literally recharges, shuffling through the days memories and storing or discarding them (which causes dreams) so that you wake up alert and clearheaded. High-EQ individuals know that their self-control, attention, and memory are all reduced when they dont get enough- or the right kind- of sleep. So, they make sleep a top priority. You stop negative self-talk in its tracksThe more you ruminate on negative thoughts, the more power you give them. Most of our negative thoughts are just that- thoughts, not facts. When it feels like something always or never happens, this is just your brains natural tendency to perceive threats (inflating the frequency or severity of an event). Emotionally intelligent people separate their thoughts from the facts in order to escape the cycle of negativity and move toward a positive, new outlook. You wont letanyonelimit your joyWhen your sense of pleasure and satisfaction are derived from the opinions of other people, you are no longer the master of your own happiness. When emotionally intelligent people feel good about something that theyve done, they wont let anyones opinions or snide remarks take that away from them. While its impossible to turn off your reactions to what others think of you, you dont have to compare yourself to others, and you can always take peoples opinions with a grain of salt. That way, no matter what other people are thinking or doing, your self-worth comes from within.Bringing it all togetherUnlike your IQ, your EQ is highly malleable. As you train your brain by repeatedly practicing new emotionally intelligent behaviors, it builds the pathways needed to make them into habits. As your brain reinforces the use of these new behaviors, the connections supporting old, destructive behaviors die off. Before long, you begin responding to your surroundings with emotional intelligence without even havin g to think about it.This article first appeared on LinkedIn.Fourteen signs that you are emotionally intelligentWhen emotional intelligence (EQ) first appeared to the masses, it served as the missing link in a peculiar finding people with average IQs outperform those with the highest IQs 70% of the time. Your work complaints on Glassdoor can be used against you
Your work complaints on Glassdoor can be used against youYour work complaints on Glassdoor can be used against youWe use employer-rater Glassdoors website to review companies, talk freely about our former employers, and give candid answers to future employees. And it works, because we assume we can do this anonymously.Maybe not for much longer, according to a9th Circuit case. The case began after the U.S. issued a subpoena to Glassdoor to identify 125 anonymous accounts that were linked to an employer under investigation for fraud.Glassdoor refused the governments demand, citing the First Amendments protection of free speech. An individuals right to anonymous free speech which includes the ability of people to leave anonymous reviews of their workplace experiences is a cornerstone of our society that inherently helps others and should be protected, Glassdoors general counsel said in a statement. The government offered a compromise just let us unmask eight accounts that were third-part y witnesses to practices directly related to the investigation.Glassdoor said it would be willing to notify those users about the subpoena, who could choose to participate in the investigation if they so wished. The government responded by turning down that deal. A district judge sided with the government as well, saying that Glassdoors justification- protecting the identity of a political group- didnt apply because the users werent making protected political speech. Is talking smack about your employer protected by the Constitution? The fact that the relevant users in this case work (or worked) for a publicly-funded program does not make this speech political, U.S. District Judge Diane Humetewa wrote in her ruling that was uploaded by consumer advocacy group Public Citizen. Nor does it transform the reviewers from individuals voicing concerns about fraud into an association engaged in advocacy.Glassdoor is not letting go of the fight, taking the case to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. This makes sense since its entire business model depends on users being able to review employers honestly with anonymity. There is a lot we still dont know about the case. Although Glassdoor requested to have the case docket unsealed, the appeals court is moving forward with it being sealed. The employer being investigated is redacted, the relevant Glassdoor reviews are unavailable to view, and we dont know how the government chose those eight employee accounts. What we do know is that if the government wins its case, it will have far-reaching consequences for how people can transparently review workplaces online. If you cant trust the anonymity of a website, youll be more likely to keep your opinions about that anfhrer to yourself- and others will walk into work situations they wish they hadnt.

When you write your own resume, not just are you able to make the essential decisions about exactly what gets included and what doesnt, but there is an immense payoff the moment it is time to interview. Highlighting the last employment record will demonstrate the responsibilities an individual previously held and the length of time they usually maintains a job. The Resume Trends 2017 Cover Up There are particular critical things you want t o think about when writing a CV. The highlight has to be on your plans for the future and the way you intend to begin achieving your aims. Your latest experience is easily the fruchtwein relevant and must be first on the list. Basically, resume writing is an art and just some of the applicants can pull it off. Like the other resumes, it is crucial to list the job particular details in the resume. Resumes today are supposed to be an advertising document not a historical record. Quite often, a resume will reveal that the applicant barely looked at the work description. A personal resume isnt a document which can be made once, then kept it safe for future uses.

5 Phrases That Can Help You in Your Salary Negotiation
5 Phrases That Can Help You in Your Salary Negotiation5 Phrases That Can Help You in Your Salary NegotiationIf you brought your A-game to your last interview and scored yourself an offer, congratulations Standing out from a sea of competitors enough to hear that coveted phrase Youre hired is notlagehing to take lightly. Now comes perhaps the even harder part- negotiating your salary. Playing your cards right during the hiring stage and getting your optimal salary will set you on the road for future financial success at each raise and promotion, as well as with how much you can put away into savingsand your retirement account. Here are a few tips to help you in your salary negotiation.Use the following smart keywords and phrases during your salary negotiationPhrase 1 Based on my researchIts important to show your potential new babo that youre willing to put the work behind asking for more money by researching exactly what you are owed. While it would be nice if we could all just make th e salary we believe we deserve, what will really impress your boss is if youve taken the time to look up what other people in the same position and with the same education and years of experience make to prove your worth. Salary.com or PayScale.com are good places to start that research.Phrase 2 Is that number flexible? If your boss lobs a number at you during salary negotiations that you believe is unacceptable, rather than getting upset or flexing some serious anger muscle, remaincalm and askhow much flexibility shehas to work with that number. In this case youll be buying yourself a little time to recall the numbers you researched from Phrase 1 so that your next sentence will let your boss know exactly who shes dealing with- in other words, someone whos come prepared.Phrase 3 What salary range have you paid someone in the same position in the past?Potential new hires are often asked in interviews what they make at their current position, or what salary theyre expecting in their new role. Answering with a specific amount will only put all the power in your bosss hands, since only she knows how much they would have actually been willing to pay you had you not just named a number that was thousands lower.Instead, counter with a totally reasonable question back to them about how much people in this position have made in the past. Its also acceptable to ask for a more complete view of the overall package being offered to you(vacation days, retirement packages, health insurance options, etc.) before settling on a fair salary.Phrase 4 Im so excited for this opportunityThroughout the salary negotiation phase you may feel a bit awkward, but its important to keep reminding your would-be boss that you really are happy to have been given an offer, and youre willing to work with her to find a salary thats suitable for you both. You dont need to repeat it over and over, but to start the negotiation by saying that youre excited for the offer, and then perhaps repeating it on ce again while youre in the thick of things, will helpdiffuse any potential doubts your new employer might be having about your willingness to accept the position.Phrase 5 NothingIt might sound weird or tricky, but try not to fill the silences during your salary negotiations with constant chatter. If you do, before you know it, you may have talked yourself down from what you were originally asking for.Instead, sit with the small silences and try to let your boss be the first one to respond. You arent the only one feeling the pressure during a salary negotiation, and your boss will appreciate the effort youre putting in, which will probably make her more likely to decide in your favor.

7 Mistakes Employees Make and How to Deal With Them
7 Mistakes Employees Make and How to Deal With Them7 Mistakes Employees Make and How to Deal With ThemOne of the joys of managing is supporting the development of your team members. One of the challenges of managing is navigating the many mistakes your employees make over time. And while the mistakes are potentially aggravating, your response to the mistakes serves as a powerful learning opportunity for your team members. This article outlines seven of the fruchtwein common employee mistakes and offers guidance for the best way for managers to deal with them in a constructive manner. 1. Asking, What Should I Do? Many employees are uncomfortable taking risks or doing something in a manner that disappoints or angers the manager. If you feed this habit by providing direction, your workers may not feel empowered to take action and fix problems or make decisions. The Solution Respond to the What should I do? inquiry with, Im not certain. What do you think you should do? Let the employ ee think about and proffer an answer. If it is in the neighborhood of correct, offer, Thats a good idea. Why dont you try it. If its not quite right, then ask questions that encouragethem to think critically. Consistent use of this technique will support employee development and improve feelings of empowerment and engagement. 2. bedrngnis Communicating With the Right Level of Detail Employees err in one of two directions on this issue. They either share too much with you or not enough. The former is annoying and the latter potentially damaging to your credibility if you are caught unaware of key issues. The Solution Educate new employees on your communication preferences for detail. If you enjoy looking at the entire picture, encourage your employees to provide detailed briefings and reports. If you prefer just the top-level details and key points, offer them some examples and for the first few updates or reports, sit down with them and provide specific feedback. Helping your em ployees understand how to communicate with the right level of detail will strengthen your ability to do your job and eliminate guessing on the part of the employee. 3. Not Communicating With the Right Frequency Much like the level of detail described above, every manager has a preference for communication frequency with subordinates. Some managers prefer daily communication and status updates. Others prefer to engage periodically for status updates, but daily communication is not required. The Solution You owe it to your employees to highlight your communication protocol. Let them understand your style and needs and offer positive reinforcement as they adapt their habits to meet your needs. Of course, as a manager, you have the responsibility to also understand their preferences and flex to adapt to their style for your own interactions with your employees. Also, remember to highlight to your employees that they must immediately notify you of emergencies and big problems. Cultiv ating an effective communication routine with your employees will help them structure their own work and operate with the assurance that they are properly supporting you. 4. Withholding Bad News If youve ever been caught by surprise about a problem one of your employees was involved in or knew about, you understand how aggravating this issue can be. Your tendency may be to display some combination of anger and frustration. Instead, bite your tongue and follow the solution described here. The Solution Draw upon your feedback skills and remind yourself that when tempers are hot or the situation is emotionally charged, you should have a cooling-off period before delivering feedback. Once youve calmed down, open your discussion with an unemotional description of how not sharing the bad nachrichten impedes your ability to help solve the problem and do your job. Indicate that you were upset about being caught unaware and that this was a mistake that cannot happen again. Theres no need to dig into why the employee held off on informing you. Simply reinforce that it is critically important for them to involve you in future situations. Ask if they understand and then end the discussion and move forward. The willingness to share bad news with the boss is a function of trust. It is possible your employee assumed that you would be angry and that the news might jeopardize their employment or at least your evaluation of them. You must reinforce that it is both expected and safe for people to share bad news with you. Just remember to not metaphorically shoot the messenger. 5. Gossiping Its nearly impossible to eliminate untersuchung about issues and people in the workplace. However, we all know that gossip is potentially misleading and even malicious. If you observe employees gossiping, it offers an opportunity for you to reinforce positive core values. The Solution Go out of your way to share with your team members the destructive potential of gossip. Let them know that the individuals engaging in and spreading gossip are risking damage to their own reputations. Reinforce the need for people to ignore gossip, and encourage them instead to seek people out and ask questions if they have workplace issues or concerns. Open, honest dialog is better than questionable allegations raised behind someones back. Your work in eliminating gossip will pay dividends in the form of a healthy workplace where individuals feel respected at all times. 6. Not Finishing Projects One manager described this as the 70-Percent Effect, where an employee would start but never finish major initiatives. He would get fruchtwein of the way there, but never quite finish, was the managers complaint. The Solution Reinforcing a culture of accountability for results is critical to your success. Teach employees to use proper project management techniques, including identifying their completion and delivery dates. While dates sometimes slip, it is incumbent upon you to ensure your employees keep their word and bring every project to closure. Too many lingering projects drains resources and management attention. If you are struggling with a 70-Percenter, redouble your efforts to observe, coach, and as needed take action. Just as your employees expect 100-percent from you as the manager, you expect the same from them. 7. Not Cooperating With Coworkers If youre not careful, you can end up serving as the referee for your employees. It is not uncommon in close quarters for employees to disagree. However, when they begin pleading with you to resolve their communication issues, it is time to take a different form of action. The Solution Meet individually and then as a group to review their communication challenges. Again, drawing upon your best feedback skills, describe in specific detail how this behavior detracts from workplace wertmiger zuwachs and success. Amplify that it detracts from their own performance. Offer to provide training on conducting diffi cult discussions. Observe the parties in action and offer ample coaching and feedback. Teaching your team members to conduct difficult discussions strengthens the opportunity for high performance to emerge and minimizes your need to serve as a referee. Instead of taking sides, train the individuals to resolve their own issues. Navigating the employee problems and mistakes is simply a part of your role as manager. Always view the problems as opportunities to teach, train, coach, and improve performance. Your positive approach to these often frustrating activities will set a powerful example for everyone on your team.

Money Talks with Renewable Energy
Money Talks with Renewable Energy Money Talks with Renewable Energy Money Talks with Renewable Energy Talking about the weather has never been more controversial. Climate change has become the hot button issue of our time on both sides of the aisle, with politicians arguing passionately both in support, and in opposition, to measures that would address the gradually warming temperatures that were seeing worldwide. At the same time, world leaders are arguing over what steps, if any, to take, what agreements to focus on, what renewable energy sources to support, and what to do today about something that may take many generations yet to play out. Whatever happens in Washington, renewable energy has arrived in corporate America in a big way, with 63 percent of Fortune 100 companies and nearly half of the Fortune 500 having set at least one clean energy target this year, according to a new study sponsored by the World Wildlife Fund. This includes efforts by corporations to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions, increase energy efficiency at their facilities and convert their systems to rely more on renewable sources of energy. And this has happened as the result of renewable energy providers and advocates speaking a language that resonates almost universally in C-suites and boardrooms worldwide: Cost. The story is that the cost of building new solar and wind systems, in particular, has come down sixty, seventy, eighty percent in the last six or seven years, says environmental consultant Andrew Winston, the author of The Big Pivot: Radically Practical Strategies for a Hotter, Scarcer and More Open World. And its not hard to leap from there to, Hey, [renewable energy] is now cheaper. This is something that we as a company can do. Projections of world energy consumption by fuel. Source: U.S. DOE In many cases, according to Winston, renewable energy has simply gotten too cheap for corporations to ignore. You look at the big tech companies, the big retailers, he says. Apples at a one hundred percent renewable now. Walmart buys a lot. The military buys a ton. Google buys gigawatts at a time. It doesnt mean at a given moment that theyre off the grid, but for the most part it means that on a sunny day the energy theyve bought is way more than they need that day. On a wintry day or a cloudy day its less, so across the year theyve bought as many renewable kilowatt hours as they use. New Tools As a result, a new universe of energy tracking and efficiency tools have sprung up to help corporations tap into these new opportunities. Bractlet, for instance, is a startup based in Austin, TX, that has developed a set of building energy analysis tools designed to help facility owners and corporate managers reduce their energy costs by tracking and identifying both wasted energy as well as efficiency opportunities. The big thing that were seeing is companies and building owners making decisions about their facilitieswhether its deciding to retire a heating system, or replacing air handling units, or upgrading building automation systemsbecause they have to, not because they want to, says Alec Manfre, Braclets CEO and cofounder. All of these different things that theyre spending capital on that they hope are going to return some money for them. But when theyre making these decisions, often they are basing them off of pretty limited, outdated information. Bractlets solution is to incorporate a laundry list of sensor-based data points into building maps that make it easy for business leaders to visualize and describe the potential cost savings associated with each possible efficiency upgrade. Just taking the capital that is already allocated to a companys buildings and facilities budget and determining where in the portfolio that capital can be allocated more efficiently can have a big impact, Manfre says, trimming energy spend by 10 to 25 percent on average just by reprograming existing systems and optimizing existing equipment. Then, when youre looking at the portfolio side, you then can strategically say, All right, I have $30 million to invest in my buildings; where should I spend it? I might have a lot of fast payback opportunities that would yield great energy savings, so maybe I take some of that savings and help offset capital costs at another building that might need a lot of work but is not going to have as good a payback. Companies can now start allocating cash in a very intelligent way to maximize returns, but also maximize energy efficiency across their properties. Options Rule the Day Some companies are even starting to look beyond the grid when consider their energy expenditures, because of the way the energy market has grown up in this country over the last century or so. In reality, energy budgeting comes down to two choicesa customer either owns their own production system (e.g. solar panels, wind turbines, etc.) or they purchase their energy on the grid from a third party that creates the power and then delivers it to them the old-fashioned way. It stands to reason, then, that any energy purchased from a third-party is going to be more expensive than any that is produced in house by a companys own energy producing asset due to basic economics. Today this means that customers have more choices than ever when allocating their energy dollars, because producing their own has gotten so cheap. What was once cost prohibitive for all but the best capitalized corporations is now well within reach for almost everyone, and that is changing the math behind renewable energy. According to Noah Kirsch, director of finance at Wunder Capital, a firm based in Boulder, CO, that is dedicated to funding solar power installations using a tech-based underwriting system to identify the best investments, the cost of a solar panel installation has fallen by orders of magnitude since the technology first went mainstream in the 1970s. Today it is far easier for corporations and other large energy customers to justify the investment. Fundamentally the economics is driving these opportunities, he says. The sales that were seeing happen are being driven by basically people going in and saying, Do you want to save money? Were not seeing sales being driven by, Hey, do you want to do something good for the Earth? That is something that might come in to play but its really not a focus right now. And, when it comes to corporate finance, that is enough to drive a major shift in renewable energy usage. Tim Sprinkle is an independent writer. For Further Discussion The story is that the cost of building new solar and wind systems, in particular, has come down sixty, seventy, eighty percent in the last six or seven years. Unique Gas Turbine Engine Powers Quieter, More Reliable Drones
Unique Gas Turbine Engine Powers Quieter, More Reliable Drones Unique Gas Turbine Engine Powers Quieter, More Reliable Drones Unique Gas Turbine Engine Powers Quieter, More Reliable Drones The earliest drones David Ransom remembers were biplanes that ran on piston engines and took off from runways. Now battery-powered quadcopters take flight vertically with relative ease. Inspired by those copters, Ransom, director of the machinery department at Southwest Research Institute, saw an opportunity to make a wider variety of unmanned aerial vehicles quieter, more reliable and able to fly longer than current engines allow. As a result, the company built a small radial gas turbine that powers a small generator that provides thousands of hours of flight to drones. Current drone turbines typically wear out after a few hundred hours. SWRIs engine is also quieter and more durable than piston engines, and provides more flight time than battery-powered motors. The fuel-to-electric system resulted from an IARPA-sponsored project to develop an architecture for a quiet unmanned aerial vehicle. For You: Improving the Internal Combustion Engine SwRI used a specialized 3D printer that can craft layered and highly detailed metal parts to build its radial gas turbine. Image: Southwest Research Institute SWRIs turbine makes a very high-frequency noise that humans cant hear. It is designed for larger drones used for surveilling different types of equipment. Drones with SWRIs turbine would be carried around in a trailer and then ground-launched, Ransom said. The turbine has an efficiency of 20 percent to 25 percent, which is not as good reciprocating engines, which can hit up to 50 percent. But the turbines application calls for less noise, not more efficiency. By and large, theyre not the most efficient machines, Ransom said. I wouldnt think of it as a replacement, but as a new enabling combination of technologies that allows you to do quiet flight operations. Turbines are also more expensive than piston engines, but the simplicity of their moving parts means easier maintenance. The new turbines also run cooler than small turbines currently in use. Those turbines are also constantly exposed to high temperatures given off during the generators combustion process. While turbines perform better as they get hotter, the extreme heat eventually damages them. To solve the overheating problem, SWRI used a new selective laser melting machine (SLM) to build small, intricate airflow passages inside the turbine that cool it without affecting power. The design, Ransom said, yielded a turbine thats both reliable and high-performing. Turbines also have an advantage in remote monitoring applications, since gasoline and diesel could be easier to transport and find than a charging station. . While other engineers are building even smaller micro gas turbine engines, Ransom doesnt think he could go any smaller with the SWRI turbine. What happens is you start to get dominated by the clearance effects between the compressor and turbine and the housing, he said. So clearance starts to become quite large compared to the size of the air flow path. Thats where you really start to lose efficiency. I think the designs that were seeing right now in this class is about the smallest practical size for a gas turbine engine. Listen to episode 2 of ASME TechCast: How Engineers Close the Communication Gap For Further Discussion I wouldnt think of it as a replacement, but as a new enabling combination of technologies that allows you to do quiet flight operations.David Ransom, Southwest Research Institute

Will learning to speed read help elevate your career
Will learning to speed read help elevate your career Will learning to speed read help elevate your career I tend to read really quickly. An online test from Staples revealed that I read 488 words per minute, about 95% faster than the national average. Over the years, friends and colleagues have asked me to teach them how to read more quickly. Their reasoning is that with so much information coming their way, reading faster would help them in school or work.In theory, it seems like a great idea. With so much information being thrown at people on a daily basis, would reading more quickly mean the ability to tackle and therefore move ahead more quickly and efficiently? Maybe.A background on speed readingIn 1959, teacher Evelyn Wood came up with a method to teach speed reading. Her pointer system was so named since she used her fingers to glide along the page as she read. Wood herself read was said to have been capable of reading up to 2,700 words per minute when she read blocks or groups of words at a time instead of the individual words from left to right. But before anyone had even hear d about Wood, Walter B. Pitkin wrote several business books including âThe Art of Rapid Reading,â back in 1929.Apps, newsletters and social mediaIn more recent times, a slew of speed-reading apps promise faster reading in no time flat, while productivity guru Tim Ferriss has his own speed reading technique.Daily newsletters like The Skimm curate headlines and what their editors deem to be need-to-know information in easily digestible points. Their tagline is âMaking it easier for you to live smarter.â But many critics have disagreed, instead, countering that dumbed down versions of newsy stories fuel many similar newsletters. Then again, social media is its own version of speed reading providing pithy if sometimes inarticulate viewpoints of current events and controversies. The value propositionIn his book âLanguage at the Speed of Sightâ Mark Seidenberg contrasted the lure of trying to read more quickly with the reality of dwindling reader comprehension. He concluded, â The exact number of words per minute is far less important than the fact that this value cannot be greatly increased without seriously compromising comprehension.âThat word, it doesnât mean what you think it doesHow many times has this happened to you; youâre scrolling through your social media feed or sitting in a meeting when someone misuses a word so badly that you tune out everything else they ever say. For me, the frequently massacred use of mortified makes me despair for the future of communication. I also suspect that people are using or reusing words without understanding or context. That presents a potentially more helpful approach than simply reading more quickly. How about instead spending a bit more time trying to understand what youâre reading?Reading comprehension is everythingWoody Allen once said âI took a speed-reading course and read War and Peace in twenty minutes. It involves Russia.â In other words, by zipping through a document, you might miss the n uance or intent. By only skimming the news, you could be missing valuable data that could help build your expertise and knowledge base. By scanning an email instead of thoroughly taking it all in, itâs entirely possible youâll miss the whole point and send the wrong response. In his book, âThe Art of Rapid Reading,â Walter B. Pitkin wrote âYou will get little or nothing from the printed page if you bring it nothing but your eye.â While we read on many more devices than the printed page, the need for comprehension remains.Hereâs a novel thought, instead of speed reading, make understanding what you read the priority. Maybe the goal should be to read it once at your own pace instead of reading in a hurry, responding and then having needless back and forth since someone along the way missed the point.Tips on reading smarter, not faster Turn off distractions: Set aside time to read a report or email and shut off the TV or text notifications or music or anything that leeches your attention from the task at hand. Keep a draft: If you responded to an email in haste, leave it in draft for an hour and then revisit. Itâs entirely possible that your response will change if youâre less stressed or not in a rush to answer. Try not to anticipate what comes next: Unlike the latest thriller, trying to figure out a solution before you know the entire issue means you might tune out valuable clues. Allow any document or written communication speak for itself before deciding how to respond.

How to Find New Motivation When You Get Lazy Working from Home
How to Find New Motivation When You Get Lazy Working from Home How to Find New Motivation When You Get Lazy Working from Home 1There are so many reasons I love working from home. I spend all day with my dogs and can watch reality television over my lunch break. Itâs the dream. But Iâll be honest: it isnât always the most motivating spot to crank through my to-do list. When thereâs no urgent need to change out of my sweatpants and the couch is only a few steps away, it can be tough to buckle down and get my work done. There are plenty of days when I struggle to muster any motivation- when I stare at a menacing, blinking text cursor for five minutes before I manage to so much as reply to an email. So, what do I do on those days when Iâm feeling totally tapped out of energy and focus? Well, it depends on what I identify as the root cause of my laziness. Here are some common reasons why you might get lazy working from home, as well as how to deal with them: Reason #1: Youâre still in your pajamas. The âworking in your pajamasâ cliché is one youâll hear a lot when you work remotely. But itâs really not all itâs cracked up to be. While Iâm all for being comfortable, Iâve found that my motivation levels typically enter a steady nosedive if I roll out of bed and head straight into my home office- without bothering to do so much as change my clothes or brush my teeth. If you think about it, it makes sense. How can you possibly generate some enthusiasm for getting work done when youâre wearing exactly what you slept in? Do This: Iâve made a habit of taking some time to get ready before I ever sit down at my computer, and I recommend you do the same. Do I make myself look as polished as I would if I were heading into a normal office? Definitely not. But even taking a few minutes to wash my face, brush my teeth, and put on some fresh clothes makes me feel a little more awake and like Iâve officially switched into âwork mode.â Reason #2: You havenât left the house in days. Cabin fever is a real thing, and being hit with the brutal realization that you havenât set foot outside in several days is always sort of jarring. I know firsthand how easy it is to stay trapped in your home office bubble, especially when you feel like your work is really flowing (and you donât want to put on real pants). But take my word for it- eventually youâre going to hit a wall. If youâve been staring at the same surroundings for days on end, itâs only natural that your mind is going to start to wander and your energy is going to lag. Do This: Itâs time to get yourself out of the house. Take your dog for a walk, run an errand, or grab your laptop and head to a local coffee shop to work for a few hours. Even just a brief change of scenery can work wonders for refreshing your perspective and your motivation. Reason #3: Youâre burnt out. Maybe youâre being too quick to point your finger and call yourself lazy. In fact, maybe youâve just done too much and now youâre plain olâ exhausted. There are plenty of studies that cite how remote workers are far more productive than their in-office counterparts, because they donât have nearly the same amount of distractions. However, you can only operate at maximum efficiency for so long before your levels run too low. Perhaps the reason the couch is calling your name so strongly is because youâre just tapped out of energy for now. Do This: You deserve a break. If your schedule offers you this sort of flexibility, step away from your desk for a little bit- even if itâs just for a half hour. You might be surprised by the amount of good that does you. Reason #4: Youâre distracted. When youâre working from home, you might not have to deal with the standard office distractions. There are no deskmates having phone conversations at ridiculous volumes or colleagues randomly popping by your desk. But that doesnât mean that your work environment is totally distraction free. Your own home offers plenty of tasks and other shiny objects that can sidetrack you. Itâs hard to focus on your to-do list if you feel like something else- whether itâs emptying the dishwasher, starting a load of laundry, or even changing that lightbulb in the bathroom- is hanging over your head. Do This: You know that task or chore thatâs nagging at you? If it can be accomplished in a reasonably short amount of time (weâll say less than a half hour), just go ahead and do it right now. Believe me, that will be a whole lot more productive than trying to push it out of your mind for the next few hours. When you work from home, itâs far too easy for the lines between your professional and personal life to become blurred- and it can be hard to muster up your motivation when youâre working only a few steps from where you sleep. The first step is to identify exactly why youâre running low on determination, and the above four reasons are incredibly common (been there, done that way too many times). Once you pinpoint the culprit, use this advice to tackle it head on and then return to your to-do list with a newfound sense of energy.

Resume Objective Statements
Resume Objective Statements Resume Objective Statements One of the most common questions our team at ResumeSpice hears from candidates is should I include an objective statement on my resume? The short answer is no. Reason being, thereâs little upside to doing so, but significant downside. An objective statement can work against a job seeker if their objective doesnât match up perfectly with what an employer is looking for in a candidate. Our goal is for an employer to evaluate a candidateâs fit for a role based on the entirety of their resume and qualifications, rather than on one statement at the top of the document. Itâs easier than ever to submit a resume, so hiring managers will see hundreds, sometimes thousands of resumes for a single role. They are looking for any reason to screen out a candidate â" an objective statement that doesnât perfectly match the role and the company is one easy way to screen a candidate out. Secondly, an objective statement is written from the perspective of the candidate, which (weâre sad to report) isnât the same perspective that a hiring manager or HR professional brings to the resume. From their end, itâs all about what you as the candidate can do for the company, not what they can do for you. The fact that youâre âseeking a marketing role at a fast-growing companyâ may be important to you, but filling the role with someone whose background and skills fit the position is whatâs most important to them. Are there ways to create visual impact at the top of a resume, without including an objective statement? Absolutely. Let us review your resume and weâll give you some thoughts on how to do so.
